Yellowstone National Park
Yellowstone became a national park in March 1872. Yellowstone is primarily in Wyoming, although parts of the park are in Montana and Idaho. The park is well known for geothermal activity and the wildlife that call the park home. .Yellowstone Park is about 80% forest and the rest of the land area is grassland. The park is larger than Rhode Island and Delaware combined.
Yellowstone National Park covers an area of approximately 3,472 square miles. This area consists of lakes, gorges, mountain ranges and rivers. Yellowstone Lake is one of the highest lakes. The elevation of the lake is 7733 above sea level. The lake is approximately 87,040 acres in total and nearly 400 feet deep.
It also has approximately 110 miles of shoreline for vacationers and wildlife to enjoy. It is located on the continent’s largest supervolcano called the Yellowstone Caldera. The volcano is considered active due to the various eruptions over the past two million years. Approximately half of the world’s geothermal energy is in Yellowstone due to ongoing volcanic activity.
Yellowstone is covered in lava rock from lava flows formed hundreds of years ago. The Continental Divide runs through the southwest portion of the park. This is a topographical feature that separates the water drainage from the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. Some of the source rivers like the Yellowstone and Snake River are close to each other, but due to the division, the Snake River empties into the Pacific Ocean while the Yellowstone River empties through the Gulf of Mexico into the Atlantic. Yellowstone National Park
is located in the Yellowstone Plateau region and is surrounded by mountain ranges on all four sides.
The elevation of the park is approximately 8,000 feet above sea level. The elevation of the surrounding mountain ranges ranges from 9,000 to 11,000 feet above sea level. , 243 feet above sea level. Yellowstone National Park is considered one of the few remaining intact ecosystems outside of the state of Alaska. The land is largely untouched by commercialization and with pristine land that allows
animals to thrive, it is a perfect habitat.
Residents still lived in the region when white survey teams first explored it.
